The Angel Of The House - 1756 Words
typical ideal of the angel of the house: a woman has to help and guide her husband in all of his undertakings. Ruskin furthermore states that a woman ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¢[â⬠¦] must be [â⬠¦] infallibly wise [â⬠¦] not that she may set herself above her husband, but that she may never fail from his sideâ⬠(qtd. in Mai 30). This means that her intellect and help are not designated for her own sake, but for her husband and his venture. Mina says herself before Dracula comes into her life that ââ¬Å"[she] [has] been working very hard lately, because [she] [wants] to keep up with Jonathanââ¬â¢s studies [and when they] are married [she] shall be able to be useful to Jonathanâ⬠(Stoker 53). Even before Draculaââ¬â¢s threat becomes imminent, she works only to help Jonathan and not forâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦in Mai 31). He then illustrates Stokerââ¬â¢s difficulty he struggles to address: ââ¬Å"women will inevitably possess some agency, but that agency must be tightly controlled in order to maintain a patriarchal system (31). The corollary of unrestrained agency ââ¬Å"in a woman is inevitably war in this case, the war fought between the ââ¬ËCrew of Lightââ¬â¢ and Dracula for the right to define womenââ¬â¢s sexuality (31). Mina represents a very well-educated and intelligent woman, she is a full time teacher and keeps up with Jonathanââ¬â¢s work to support him. Representing a ââ¬ËNew Woman,ââ¬â¢ who is typically independent and progressive, she even talks about the ââ¬ËNew Womanââ¬â¢ ideals when she states that ââ¬Å"some of the ââ¬ËNew Womanââ¬â¢ writers will some day start an idea that men and women should be allowed to see each other asleep before proposing or accepting. But I suppose the New Woman wonââ¬â¢t condescend in future to accept; she will do the proposing herself. And a nice job she will make of it, too!â⬠(Stoker 85). Interesting here is her usage of ââ¬Å"some of the ââ¬ËNew Wo manââ¬â¢,â⬠which excludes herself from being one of the independent and strong women. Even though Mina takes up an essential role during the journey of tracking, identifying and finally erase Dracula, one can interpret her as passive. According to Sally Ledger, professor of Victorian literature, Mina represents a woman who is ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¢firmly rooted in theShow MoreRelatedAnalysis Of The Poem The Angel Of The House 893 Words à |à 4 Pagesââ¬Å"The Angel in the Houseâ⬠During the Victorian Era in 1837 the period that was ruled by Queen Victoria I, women endured many social disadvantages by living in a world entirely dominated by men.
